Katherine M. Kotulla, 97, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Brookdale Senior Living in Vernon Hills. She was born November 21, 1918 in Chicago to Mathias and Katherine (Geisen) Simon. She spent her early childhood in Aachen, Germany before her family settled in the Northwest side of Chicago. She married Norbert J. Kotulla in 1941 and they celebrated 66 years of marriage before his death in 2008. Loving sister to Matt Simon (deceased); loving mother to Michael J. Kotulla (deceased), Jerry Kotulla, M.D. of Asheville, NC, Wendy Kotulla and spouse Lori Rieth of Third Lake. Long time resident of Chicago and Park Ridge. She lived 97 full years on this earth. Victor Anthony Leogrande, 94, a resident of Grayslake, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2016 at The Village of Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst where he received wonderful care. He was born July 1, 1922 in Syracuse, NY. Victor was a World War II veteran having served with the US Army. He was a lifelong employee of Walgreens and a loving husband and father. Victor is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pearl, his daughter Jeanette Mummert, his grandson Adam Victor Shearin, and his great-grandchildren La’Eabha Shearin, Pax Shearin, and Kaylin Shearin. Donald Walter Birgerson, age 77 , passed away on September 22, 2016. Donald was born in Chicago, IL to Walter Alfred and Ebba Sophia Birgerson on June 15, 1939. He graduated from Wittenberg University in Ohio and was a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church. He worked as a Microsystems Sales Consultant and retired from Leica Microsystems after 40 years. Florence Groll
Florence Groll, age 86, passed away at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Round Lake Beach on September 20, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. The staff of Hillcrest along with the Hospice group surrounded Florence with care, comfort and compassion during her final days. From her birth on October 26, 1929 in Morton Grove until her death, she lived a simple, unpretentious life. On November 24, 1929, Florence was baptized by Rev. A. H. Werfelmann of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenview. As a child, Florence attended church, played the clarinet and enjoyed basketball, where she earned her nickname of “Pony” due her swiftness of foot. She enjoyed craft making, playing cards, baking, and completing puzzle books. Florence had a strong work ethic. She was a solderer and factory worker most of her life and later worked as a home care assistant for senior citizens into her mid-70s. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Josephine Glauner, her sisters, Violet and Lorraine, and her husband, Harry Groll. Left to honor her memory are her son, Charles (Donna Eckel), her daughters, Judy (Steve) Davis, Carol (John) Anderson, and Linda (Craig) Somerville, and her grandchildren, Christian, Shawn, Serina, Johnny, Cindy, Shelly, Heather, Nick, Craig and Steven, and her many great-grandchildren. Florence received Jesus Christ as her Savior as a child and recently rededicated her life to the Lord. Patricia Kathleen Angelos, age 74, passed away Monday, September 19, 2016 at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. She was born in Chicago on October 20, 1941 to Harold and Ethel (Schiffelbein) Matthews. Patricia was a waitress and bartender most of her life. She loved her son very much and her neighbor, Jeff, whom she called her second son who took such good care of her and her wonderful neighbors next door. She also adored her beloved dog, Piper. Frank W. Dorfler, 76, of Grayslake, passed away peacefully September 15, 2016. He was born to Alfred and Ruby (Snyder) Dorfler of Grayslake on August 28, 1940. Frank was a lifelong resident of Grayslake and had a long career as a truck driver in the Lake County area. He enjoyed cooking, woodworking, carving and spending time with Reno, his Boxer. John “Jack” Flynn
John(Jack) Flynn born July 22,1933, passed away September 18, 2016. Jack grew up in the Canaryville neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, where he met the love of his life, Dorisann Cox. They married on September 21,1957 at St. Gabriel’s Parish and enjoyed 59 wonderful years together. Jack was a beloved father to (the late) Kathleen, Ann, Neil, Tim, Dan and Ellen and later helped raise his nephew, Bill Cox. In1969 they moved to Waukegan to raise their family. After years of success working in freight auditing, his love of writing brought him to the News Sun where he was a feature writer, a job he loved. His wit, humor and silliness will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his children, 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, brother Ed Flynn and sister Mary Fitzpatrick. Jacqueline P. (nee: Schuck) Herskovitz, 84, a resident of Round Lake Beach, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Advocate Condell Medical in Libertyville. Ellen (Jean) Hazard, 89, of Grayslake IL, passed away September 16, 2016 with family by her side. Ellen was born in Star, OK on 11/14/26. She moved to the Zion area after her marriage to Theodore Hazard on December 29, 1945. They were married 24 years until his death in 1970. Ellen worked at Zion businesses, One Hour Martinizing, Ehler’s Lanes, Rittenhouse Grocery, Zion Bread Store and the Zion Restaurant. She enjoyed embroidery, quilting and old country music but most of all she enjoyed having her family around. She loved every minute of the visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the highlight of her life. Ellen is survived by her sons, Charles of Zion and Larry of Gurnee; daughters, Kathy Cherry of Wickenburg, AZ and Joyce Hazard of Waukegan; one sister, Leona Gossett of Keota, OK; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Illinois, Wisconsin, California and Tennessee. Kenneth H. Riendeau
Kenneth Henry Riendeau, age 89, formerly of Rolling Meadows, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Winchester Nursing Home in Libertyville, IL. He spent his entire career as a sales professional, primarily in the fields of communications, insurance and real estate.
He was the husband of the late Lillian Dolores Riendeau (nee Rompala), whom he married on June 26, 1954. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary a few months before her passing on November 8, 2004. Their marriage was blessed with five sons and eight grandchildren. His sons are Russell (Cheryl), Wayne (Diane), Greg, Claude (Leslie), and Gary (Melody). His grandchildren are Danielle (Stephen), Grant, Tim (Kaylena), Ben, Nick, Elise, Justin and Jake. Ken was preceded in death by his wife Lillian and his parents, George and Helen (nee Jagodzinski). Ken is survived by his brother, Jack (Phyllis).
Ken was born in Chicago, and he served his country in the Korean War. Ken was also a volunteer for a variety of various civic and volunteer charitable activities, and he was a member and volunteer of St. Colette Church in Rolling Meadows for over 40 years. Ken was a diehard sports fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Blackhawks virtually his entire life. Ken loved playing goalie as the ‘6th man’ in many street hockey games with his five boys, and was a constant presence at his sons’ numerous sporting events over many years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday morning, September 22, from 9 am to 11 am at the old church building at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 22333 W. Erhart Road, Mundelein, IL 60060, which is near the corner of Fremont Center Road and Gilmer Road. Mario Reyes, age 50, of Skokie, passed away at Evanston Hospital in Evanston on Saturday, September 10, 2016. He was born in Mexico on October 10, 1965 to Jose and Martha (Valadez) Reyes. Michael S. Stickels
Michael Scott Stickels (born December 8, 1961) died suddenly on September 3, 2016 at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. Formerly of Grayslake, Michael lived his last thirty-two years as a client in one of the Clearbrook facilties, most recently the Fairfax Home in Rolling Meadows. Mike enjoyed participating in Developmental Training, Special Olympics of Illinois, Clearbrook bowling, Funfest, the Metropolis Theater production of Robin Hood, and many more. He loved Lucy’s cooking and an occasional night out at Sam’s. Michael’s family will dearly miss him. He was preceded in death by his father, Milton Stickels and his mother, Jean Duell Stickels, both of Grayslake. He is survived by three brothers, Steven (Bing) Stickels of Siloam Springs, AR; Douglas (Leslie) Stickels of Wheaton, IL.; and David Stickels of Tahlequah, OK. He is also survived by his step-mother Phyllis Stickels of Grayslake, IL. and step-sisters Debra (Paul) Claxton of Hainesville, IL. and Tamien (Sheldon) Lustig of Deerfield, IL. David John Johnson, age 51, of Round Lake Beach, passed away at his home on Saturday, September 3, 2016. He was born in Chicago on August 14, 1965 to Darryl and Irene (Gierman) Lance. He was known for his outrageous sense of humor. He loved to fish and ride motorcycles. He was a great mechanic. He had a big heart and would help anyone. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandbabies. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Christine, whom he married on July 9, 1994 in Chicago. Settimo Steve Pollina, age 96, of Hainesville, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was born August 27, 1920 in Independence, LA, to Rosario and Josephine (Singerella) Pollina. A veteran of World War II, Settimo was a life-long barber who owned his shops. He was a devoted and loving family man who took pride in his Catholic faith. He is survived by his children, Gary of Hainesville, Kenneth (Mary Ellen) of Geneva, Daniel (Tiffanie) of Hainesville; his grandchildren, Kathryn, David, Elizabeth, Daniel, Stephen and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Matthew, and his wife of 59 years, Irene.
