Mary Jean Nelson

Mary Jean Nelson, age 74, of Round Lake Beach, passed away on July 24, 2018 in Sunflower County in Indianola, Mississippi. She was born on February 12, 1944 in Chicago to Lillian and Joseph Mikieta.  She is survived by her children, Deborah (Greg) Hinkley of Grayslake, Corinne (David) Ness of Antioch, and Sharon (Bobby) Donnellan of Lake Villa; grandchildren, Abby, KC, Jimmy, Thomas, Max, Martin, Savannah and Aidan; and siblings, Joan (Robert) Morton and Pete (Teri) Mikieta. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Richard; her parents; and 4 brothers.  A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, July 29, 2018 from 3:00pm until 7:00pm at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Susan M. Fitzgerald

Susan Marie Fitzgerald, nee Devaney, age 83, late of Round Lake, formerly of Libertyville, passed away on June 24, 2018. She was the beloved daughter of the late Frank J. and late Susan (nee Campbell) Devaney; loving wife of the late John; dear sister of the late Patricia Walsh, late Mary Ellen Devaney, and late Kathleen McManaman; devoted mother of Alison and the late Jay; dear grandmother of Ryan Elizabeth Fitzgerald; fond aunt of Mark and the late Greg Walsh as well as Brian, Kevin, Mark (Jennifer) and the late Tommy McManaman; and also Gerald (Denise) Fitzgerald, James (Jane) Fitzgerald, Thomas (Joyce) Fitzgerald, Julie Schauer, Peter (Nina) Fitzgerald, Donald Swanson, Sally (Mike) Powers, Susan (Russell) Anderson, Laura (Mark) Miller, Matthew (Amy) Fitzgerald, and Christopher Fitzgerald. She was a loving cousin to many. Sue was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Chicago Class of 1952 and attended Harper College. She worked as an interior designer for various furniture stores over many years, and she loved to cook, entertain, and throw frequent parties for her family and friends. She also took her children and other family members on numerous fondly remembered vacations to Wisconsin, Florida, and elsewhere. Sue was never shy with her opinions, and she loved to read mysteries and other works. She embraced her Irish heritage and was close to relatives in Ireland, including Ann McDonald, Patrick Thornton, and Bernie Thornton. Family and friends will gather at 11 A.M. on Saturday, August 4, at Strang Funeral Home, 410 E. Belvedere Road, Grayslake, Ill., followed by a short memorial service at noon.

Robert “Bob” G. Schultz Jr.

Robert “Bob” G. Schultz Jr., 75, a resident of Gurnee, IL, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL.  Bob was born January 10, 1943 in Chicago, IL to Bob and Rose Schultz Sr.  Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan, his children Bob (Bobbie) Schultz III and Lynn (Keith) Rollene, his grandchildren Rylee and Katie Schultz and Payton Rollene, and his siblings Al (Kathy) Schultz, Peggy (Tom) Carey, and Bill (Jan) Schultz.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Donny.  A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 1:00pm until 4:00pm with a funeral service commencing at 4:00pm at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Colonel Robert F. Heinz Jr.

Colonel Robert F. Heinz Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife of 47 years Erika Heinz and his son MAJ Erik L. Heinz at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville earlier this Spring on 24 April 2018 due to complications from pneumonia. He lived a full life just shy of his 85th birthday. Colonel Heinz is survived by his wife Erika, his three sons Robert F. Heinz III, Richard A. Heinz, MAJ Erik L. Heinz and his daughter Tina Weisler. He is also remembered through his grandchildren; Christopher Heinz, Robin Heinz, Matthew Trawczynski, SSG Anna Trawczynski and SPC Dillon Wolfe. He was preceded by his mother, father and his sister Lois.
Colonel Heinz was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 15, 1933 to Anne and Robert Heinz. He graduated from Fenger Academy High School in 1951, then attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois from 1951 to 1955 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He was designated a Distinguished Military Graduate (DMG) from the Senior ROTC Program and was Commissioned a 2LT, Medical Service Corps/Regular Army on July 2, 1955.
He attended his Branch Officer Basic Orientation Course at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. His first duty assignment was with the Medical Company of the 61st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado, where he served as the Mess, Motors, Maintenance and Supply Officer.
During his first assignment, Colonel Heinz was chosen to attend Army Cargo Helicopter Pilots training at Fort Rucker, Alabama in March of 1956. Upon completion of training in October of that year, he was assigned to the 50th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) in the Republic of Korea where he served for 18 months. In 1959, then 1LT Heinz was selected to attend Fixed Wing training at Gary Air Force Base, San Marcos, Texas. Upon completion of this training he was assigned to the 5th United States Army Flight Detachment, Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
Multiple tours in West Germany, Fort Bragg, Fort Benning and two tours in the Republic of Vietnam followed. This included a tour on the Army Aviation Test Board, Fort Rucker, Alabama where he was the OH6-A (Little Bird) Test Manager and Chief of Aircraft Plans being responsible for all facets of testing and the ultimate deployment of the OH6-A (Little Bird). He was also the Medical Service Corps Army Reserve component advisor in Columbus, Ohio in 1975.
While stationed at Fort Rucker with the Aviation Test Board, Colonel, then Major Heinz, obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Troy State University. During his last tour in West Germany, from 1972 to 1975, Colonel Heinz served as the Commander, 30th Medical Group, Ludwigsburg and Surgeon of VII Corps.
He was promoted to full Colonel in July 1979 and finished his service as the Medical Coordinator for Army Readiness Region V, Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He then became the 4th Army Headquarters, Senior Army Medical Advisor with a Reserve Component responsibility of seven states and 49,000 medical reservists/guardsman.Colonel Heinz retired from active duty on 1 August 1985 at Fort Sheridan after 30 years of service to his country.
Colonel Heinz then returned to school and obtained an Associate Degree in Human Services and became a certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor, then the Program Coordinator for the Lake County Substance Abuse Program, Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center, Waukegan, Illinois for 17 years.
Colonel Heinz’s military decorations include: The Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross for Valor, Bronze Star w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC), Meritorious Service Medal w/ 2OLC, Air Medal w/ “V” device for Valor and 12OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/ 1OLC, Vietnamese Service Medal w/ 3 Stars, Vietnamese Campaign Medal w/ 10 Campaigns and the Senior Army Aviator Badge.
Foreign decorations include: Korean Legion of Merit- Wha Rang, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/ Silver Star.
Colonel Heinz’s civilian organizations include the Sigma Nu Collegiate Fraternity, Phi Theta Kappa Scholastic Fraternity, the Exchange Club, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and the Dust-Off Association.
Colonel Heinz loved boating, emailing friends, “brown box sales” at Sears and JC Penny, Jelly Belly’s, his Yugo addiction in the 80’s and his SMART car. But by far, his love of Amazon will forever be remembered!
Colonel Heinz was laid to rest on May 4, 2018 at Fort Sheridan Cemetery in Lake Bluff, IL. He was sent with full military honors, surrounded by family, friends and his fellow soldiers already waiting for him.

LaVerne K. Thompson

LaVerne K. Thompson, 91, a resident of Round Lake Heights, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at her home.  She was born November 2, 1926 in Chicago, IL to Matthias and Rene Groenwald.  LaVerne was a member of the Round Lake Lions/Lioness Club and a member of the United Protestant Church in Grayslake.  She was an avid bowler and was a part of Lakes Bowling Leagues for many years.  LaVerne is survived by her children John (Elaine), James (Alice), Jacki (Reid) Flade, Joni (Larry) Eskridge, and Jodi (Earl) Cox, her grandchildren Justin, Blake, Brandon, Ian, Zack, Matthew, and Elizabeth, and her great-grandchildren Adelyn, Logan, James, Haley, Colton, Joey, and Savannah.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry, and her sisters Elvera and Lorraine.  A visitation and funeral service is scheduled for Monday, July 30, 2018 from 9:00am until 11:00am with the funeral service commencing at 11:00am at the United Protestant Church 54 S. Whitney St. Grayslake, IL.  Interment will be held following the services at Highland Memorial Park in Libertyville, IL. Angel L. Rivera

Angel L. Rivera, age 87, of Waukegan, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at his home.  He was born September 3, 1930 in Ciales, Puerto Rico.  A member of St. Dismas Church,  Angel was also a former member of the Puerto Rican Society and St. Joseph’s.  Angel is survived by his wife, Elba I. Kay “Michelle” Merten

Kay “Michelle” Merten (Campbell), age 54, Grayslake, IL
Passed away Monday, July 16, 2018. She was born in Kansas City, MO on December 20th, 1963 to James and Elizabeth (Davis) Campbell. She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 26 years David Merten, children Alex and Kristina Merten and brother Tim Campbell. Michelle’s passion in life was being a mother to her two beautiful children Alex and Kristina and her beloved dog Choco, and aunt to her niece and two nephews. Michelle’s life revolved around her husband and two children. Nothing brought her more pleasure in the world than attending all of their swimming, gymnastic, cheer, running or scouting events, to just name a few. She was so proud of all their accomplishments and of being their mother. Along with being an amazing wife and mother, she was a wonderful friend to many. She was fun, sassy and willing to help anyone who needed it. She had a beautiful smile and a wonderful laugh that brightened any room. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will take place Saturday July 21, 2018 from 9 am to 10:30 am with Mass at 10:30 am followed by Lunch at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6401 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee, IL. Ana C. Escobales

Ana C. Escobales, age 38, a resident of Round Lake Beach, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2018 in Chicago.  She was born December 13, 1979 in Puerto Rico.  She worked in customer service.  Ana is survived by her fiancé Chris Boltorf, whom she became engaged to in October 2016; her mother, Dora Agosto;  brothers, Ismael Agosto III and Javier Escobales; daughter, Amy L. Freibauer; son, Jason O. Freibauer; daughters, Karena E. Eckstein and Victoria R. Eckstein;  son, Vince M. Eckstein; grandma, Rosa T. James Scott Mutter

James “Scott” Mutter, age 36, a longtime resident of Grayslake, passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2018. He was born February 11, 1982 in Evanston to Michael and Alison Mutter. Scott is survived by his parents, his sister Kristin Traut (David), his nephews Simon and Maxwell Traut, his extended family, and his cat Piglet. Wilfredo A. Reyes

Wilfredo Ang Reyes, 73, a resident of Round Lake, passed away on July 11, 2018 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was born on March 24, 1945, in the Philippines to Ricardo and Magdalena Reyes. A proud Veteran, Reyes joined the US Navy in the Philippines in 1967, served in Vietnam and retired in 1989 after 22 years of service. After Military retirement, he spent 16 years at Commonwealth Edison/Midwest Generation.  He is survived by his wife Frida, son Richard, daughter Rebecca (Jason) Falkinham, son Rick, granddaughter Madison Falkinham, sister Remedios (Artemio) Mendoza, brother Apolonio (Wendy), numerous nephews, nieces and their families. He loved to fish, drive in the countryside and was an avid military aficionado. He was a true patriot and extremely proud of his military service. Lonny Jones

Lonny Jones, 75, a resident of Grayslake, IL, passed away July 12, 2018 in Milwaukee, WI.  He was born November 3, 1942 in Chicago, IL to Howard and Margaret (nee: Dionice) Jones.  Lonny loved poker, shooting pool, gambling, golf, fishing and, most importantly, Lonny loved his family.  He also enjoyed taking long walks on the beach and poking dead things with a stick.  Lonny is survived by his wife of 51 years, Yolanda, whom he wed on April 10, 1967 in Wheaton, IL, his children David and Janet both of Grayslake, his grandchildren Nicole of Lake Villa, Lonnie of Grayslake, and Andrea of California, his great grandchildren Koda of Lake Villa, Grayson of California, and one more on the way, his siblings Thomas(Cynthia)Jones of Huntley, Illinois, and Pamela (John) Pocrnich of Florida, and two children adopted by love, Chris Longley and Alison Allred.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Debbie Tegleman of Trevor, WI,  his brother Dennis Holland of Zion, Il, and a grandson Richie.   All funeral arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Kathleen T. Tomasello

Kathleen T. Lisa Campos

On July 10, 2018, Lisa Campos, age 52, of Round Lake, chose to be with God as he needed another angel.

Lisa was a dedicated employee with the Round Lake Library for approximately 10 years.

Lisa leaves behind 5 children, Zak, Emily, Kayla, Karla and Anne-Marie; also missing her are 3 grandchildren, Elisa, Gabriel and Ava.  Watching her take this journey to God are her brother Mark Campos; brother-in-law, Antonio; and mom, Peggy Stupey.  Many aunts, uncles and cousins are also missing her, but we all realize Lisa is no longer suffering after months of illness in the hospital.

Melvin G. Carlson

Melvin George Carlson, 77, a resident of Grayslake, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was born June 22, 1941 in Chicago to Carl and Katherine Carlson. He was a retired English teacher at Glenbrook North High School and was a member of St. Peter Church in Volo. He is survived by his brothers, Carl (Linda) and Robert; his nephews, Eric (April) Carlson and Shane Carlson; his great-nephew and great-niece, Cayden and Morgan; and cousins, Dennis (Josie) Sell, Stan Carlson, Corinne DeVelasco, Rhoda (Jerry) Carlson and Brian (Liz) Sell. John L. Schwartz

John L. Schwartz, age 57, of Lake Villa passed away on July 8, 2018.  He was born August 4, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.  He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1984.  It was his last semester of college when he met his future wife in Introduction to Ballroom Dance.  He and Sandy Grivett were married on September 26, 1987.  He was a long time member of Wildwood Presbyterian Church in Grayslake where he had served as an Elder, youth group advisor, and member of their adult choir.

For the past twenty years he worked as a Walgreens pharmacist, primarily in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

In his spare time he and Sandy enjoyed travel, ballroom dancing and relaxing at home with a glass of wine and good friends.

John is survived by his wife Sandy Grivett, parents Dr. and Mrs. Walter R.  (June) Schwartz, brother Richard (Chris) Schwartz, sister Linda Hutchins, eight nieces and nephews and a great-niece.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 14 from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. at Wildwood Presbyterian Church, 18630 W Old Gages Lake Rd, Grayslake, IL 60030, with the service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Pastors Erik Holm and Jill Paulson will lead the memorial service.

David M. Anderson

David M. Anderson, 86, a resident of Grayslake and formerly of Prairie View, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at his home.  He was born October 20, 1931 in Evanston, IL to Edward and Elizabeth Anderson.  Dave spent his early years in Lake County IL attending Half Day Grade School and Libertyville High School. He worked in the construction industry, served in the US Army in the Korean War and the Army Reserves. Dave went on to own and operate Dave’s Sinclair Service Station in Half Day and was a Volunteer Fireman for the Vernon Fire Protection District. In 1967, he was elected Vernon Township Highway Commissioner serving for 30 years until his retirement in 1997. Dave’s love of fishing had him also working part-time at BonADon Custom Fishing and Tackle for 20 years and to then open Dave’s Reel Service.  After retiring Dave was a Trustee for the Lincolnshire Riverwood’s Fire Protection District for 10 years. Many also remember Dave as an active and encouraging Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, wood working, and playing cards, bingo, and Yahtzee with his friends. As an avid fisherman, he cherished his annual trip to Canada with family and friends. He liked meeting new people wherever he went, and will be lovingly remembered for his kind and compassionate heart, easy going manner, upbeat attitude, willingness to lend a hand, and offering an uplifting word. Dave is survived by his loving companion for the past 9 years, Mary Jean Black, his children Daniel (Leann), Eric (Judy), Ellen Zeppo (Tony), David (Karen George), Amy (Chandra Govind) and Mark (Tara), his grandchildren Brad, Stacy, Lauren, Zach, Brennan, Camden, Aliyah, Christopher, Adam, Alaina, Cathy (Tom), and Mike (Karen), and his greatgrandchildren Zachary, Ryan and Carly.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Patricia, his brother Edward, and his beloved wife of 52 years, Mary T. Dale Marie Strzyz, age 65, of Des Plaines, passed away Friday, June 29, 2018. She was born on July 6, 1952 in Chicago. She was a former CSO with the Grayslake Police Department. Frank D. Thielitz

Frank D. Thielitz, age 69, a resident of Grayslake, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2018 at Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston, WI. He was born on March 7, 1949 in Chicago, IL. Frank is survived by his wife, Dian, whom he married on June 17, 1979. He is further survived by his son, Jonathan; daughters, Lisa (Craig) Leeper and Paula Detienne; grandchildren, Tyler Detienne and Amy Leeper; sisters, Joanne Korte, Sharon Radeker, Janice Corbett, and LuAnn (Robert) Long; and many nieces and nephews. Gloria J. Slipke

Gloria Jean Slipke, 91, a resident of Mundelein, IL, passed away Monday, June 25, 2018 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL.  She was born June 2, 1927 in Chicago, IL to Fred and Angeline Difiore.  Gloria is survived by her children Robert (Linda Wegge) Slipke, Gary (Linda) Slipke, and Joyce Farley, her grandchildren Bryan Slipke, Gary Jr., Joseph (Atur), and John Slipke, and Krysten and Michael Farley, her soon to be great-grandson, her sister Lita Toso, her niece Pamela Ullo, and her great-niece Sunnie Ullo.  A memorial visitation and Mass is scheduled for Friday, June 29, 2018 from 10:00am until 11:00am with a Mass commencing at 11:00am at St. Mary of Annuciation 22333 W.
