Nancy J. Robison

Nancy J. Robison, age 66, passed away peacefully at her home on June 16, 2020, after a long illness. The youngest of three daughters, she was born on August 10, 1953 in Janesville, Wisconsin to Francis and Marianne Flaherty. When she was 13, her family moved to Lighthouse Point, Florida. Nancy fell in love with the beach, and even after she moved back to the Midwest as an adult, she often returned to Florida to bask in the warmth and sunlight—and to visit relatives, especially her sister Tracey, who passed in 2012. Nancy began her career as a teacher, but soon found her true calling as a counselor, helping kids and families through life’s difficulties. After spending some time with Warren Township Youth Services, she and her best friend Phil Kirschbaum opened Gurnee Counseling Center in 1986. Over the years they built a successful business, and she provided comfort, hope, and healing to hundreds of clients. Though she and Phil eventually retired, Gurnee Counseling Center still serves the community today. In 1985 she met her husband Dan Robison at a party on a boat in Waukegan Harbor—they married a year later. She gave birth to her daughter Becky in 1988, and her second daughter, Molly, in 1990. Nancy was a loving wife and mother who did everything she could to keep her family safe and happy. She encouraged her children to pursue their passions with heart, and she provided unfailing support. She also instilled in them an appreciation for knowledge—they watched Jeopardy! together almost every night. Nancy is survived by her husband Dan, her daughters Becky and Molly, her sister Trish, and lots of nieces and nephews. Due to the pandemic, her memorial service will take place next year. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to Warren Township Youth Services. Please make checks out to Warren Township Youth Services and include “Nancy F.” in the memo section; mail them to 100 S. Greenleaf St., Gurnee, IL 60031.

Philip Malizio

Philip Malizio, age 71, a resident of Lake Villa, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020 at his home.  He was born July 11, 1948 in Evanston to Frank and Arline Malizio.  Philip was a member of the American Legion and Teamsters local 731.  A veteran of the U.S. Army, Philip was stationed in Panama from 1968-1970.  He was a simple man with simple needs.  He was content with little. Philip was also an avid sports memorabilia collector and a baseball fan. As a child, Gina came home with a pack of baseball cards and it sparked an obsession and love for baseball collectibles including cards and autograph baseballs.  Gina and Phil would then take trips to the multiplex the years the Bulls were in championship mode and they got players’ autographs.  They were such regulars there that Phil Jackson had accosted Phil and asked him if he was selling this for a profit.  He was not and never did.  Philip drove a semi-truck for a living, hauling steel initially and then construction materials and made many lifelong friends in the process.  This is when and where he became a teamster.  He would occasionally take Gina and Pat’s younger, Bryan, for rides.  They both had fun on “truck day.” Later in life he drove a school bus and was a fan favorite of the kids.  After that, he became a patient driving instructor.  Not sure if it was the same when Gina was learning how to drive, whether she would have agreed with the term “patient,” nevertheless.  Philip also enjoyed small road trips, a good diner breakfast with his brothers and good friends.  Later on after his disability made it more difficult for him to be mobile, he developed a love for nature.  He would sit out on the deck watching the different birds and squirrels.  He had a squirrel feeder out and even named the squirrels.  Philip is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia, whom he married in Glenview on March 17, 1979; daughter, Gina of Chicago; and brothers, Norman (Jana) Malizio of Mundelein and Lawrence Malizio of Libertyville.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne.  A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2020 from 11:00am until 2:00pm followed by a memorial funeral service at 2:00pm at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 East Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the Veterans Association of America.  For more information, please call 847-223-8122 or log on to www.strangfuneral.org.

Raymond “Ray” R. Hook

Raymond “Ray” Russell Hook, age 62, of Lake Villa, IL, passed into his eternal life with Jesus after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at home surrounded by his family.

Ray was born August 21, 1957 in Libertyville, IL to William and Delores (Vanderspool) Hook.  He grew up and attended school in Grayslake, IL.  He married Elizabeth Berg on November 18, 1988 in Indian Creek, IL.  Throughout his career he worked at F&M Autoparts, Prototype Racing Engines, EH Wachs, ITW, Pure Technologies, Newman Wachs Racing and Xylem Water Solutions.  He became of member through adult confirmation of Faith Ev. Lutheran Church in Antioch, IL where he served as an usher.

Ray would have loved to have you over in his impeccably clean and fully decorated garage for a cold drink and to tinker around on projects. You’d spend time learning things like: there is literally nothing that cannot be rebuilt or restored by him; a little elbow grease goes a long way; never miss an event of your kids- because Ray sure wouldn’t and was his daughters’ biggest fan (he was also the proudest pageant/dance/cheer dad in Lake County- and those lucky enough to see his dance moves and costume sewing skills would attest to that); great cooking requires use of every pan in the kitchen; if you’re going to do something- you better do it right and make it perfect; you can never work too many hours in the day- especially if it’s doing something you love; before you take your Harley on a ride with him- you better wax and clean it because his will be; and almost every motorized vehicle could be made a little faster and louder once Ray worked on it. What you’d probably learn the most from your time in the garage with him was not what he said (as we all know he was a man of few words- unless he was telling a story), but rather what he did. You’d witness something fierce about hard work, integrity, and never giving up. You’d witness what selfless love, loyalty and forgiveness look like. You’d quickly learn to never complain about anything, because no matter if Ray was injured or just went through days of chemo and radiation, he never would. You’d learn there is no project or task of a family or friend that you won’t roll up your sleeve to help with in a moment’s notice.  You’d learn what it means to be an amazing father, husband, mentor and friend.

Ray is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Elizabeth; daughters Aubreyanne (Ryan) Pollesch of Ripon, WI and Alicia Hook of Cedarburg, WI; sister Carolyn Dawn (Michael) Wright; brother-in-law John (Kathleen) Berg; mother-in-law Carole Berg; sister-in-law Joan Bercoon; many nieces and nephews and amazing friends who called and treated him like a brother and have become our family.  He is preceded in death by his parents.
