Erich W. Wolter, Jr.

Erich W. Wolter Jr., 96, a resident of Grayslake, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2021. He was the youngest of eight children born to parents Erich W. Wolter and Emilie J. Michalec of Chicago.

He played halfback for Tilden Technical High School and remembered fondly when his team faced rival Leo Catholic High School at the 1941 and 1942 Chicago Prep Bowl games at Soldier Field. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy Armed Guard and served as a 20mm gunner on the SS Jane A. Delano, SS William Ford Nichols, and SS Iraq Victory. After the war, he served three years as a sergeant in the National Guard of Illinois, Battery B 124th Field Artillery Battalion.

At age 13, Erich spotted Bette O’Leary on her bicycle and decided she would be his girl from that moment on. Bette may have felt differently at the time, but they did marry ten years later. Erich made his living as a tool and die maker, a career that spanned 50 years. A man of many interests, he enjoyed fishing, photography, woodworking, beermaking, shooting sports, bowhunting, and travel. He won several trophies in archery at the Aurora Sportsmen’s Club during his membership there. Erich loved the open road, whether that meant a Sunday drive with his family to a neighboring state or a long tour of the American West. A lifelong fascination with the beauty and history of that region spurred him to learn more about the mountain men. He joined the Illinois Free Trappers club to experience the culture and traditions of these wilderness explorers and fur trappers of the 1800s. Known as “Teton” to his friends in the group, he gained a reputation as a skilled competitor and was named the muzzleloading rifle “Shooter of the Year” for several years running.

Erich taught his children, by word and by example, to mind their mother and respect their elders; to be responsible citizens; to always put forth their best efforts; to appreciate the beauty of nature; and to take the back roads to see the real America. To his family, he will always be the captain of the ship, the life of the party, and the heart of every Christmas.

Erich was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Elizabeth “Bette” (nee O’Leary), and his son-in-law Edward Glanz. He was a loving father to Erich (Mindy), Diane, Susan Glanz, and Kurt (Suzanne); loving grandfather to Matthew Pollina, Andrew (Nikki) Pollina, and Patrick (Megan) Glanz; treasured great-grandfather (“Papa”) to Ryleigh Pollina, Taylor Pollina, and Chloe Baranoski; and cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews. Friends of the family may visit on Saturday, December 18, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030. Burial will be held privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org. Victor Palazzolo

Victor “Vic” Palazzolo, age 83, a longtime resident of Wildwood for 58 years, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family following a 3-year battle with AML.  He was born on June 15, 1938 in Chicago to Victor and Marie Palazzolo.

Vic graduated from Grayslake Community High School in 1958. He was involved in numerous school athletic activities. He developed a love for boating and waterskiing. He was often found on Round Lake or the Chain O’Lakes.

Vic met his wife Barbara “Barb” (nee Cwik) at a local dance and they were married in 1963. He held multiple jobs in order for Barb to stay home and raise their two children. These jobs included working for the US Post office (Grayslake), and was partner in a cleaning business for local Grayslake Businesses. He then began working as a bartender at the Country Squire Restaurant. In 1971 he was promoted to General Manager. In the late 1970’s, he helped a few friends with managing their restaurants. Through networking, Vic accepted a position as a Human Resource Manager for Klein Tools in Skokie and then moved to Lincolnshire. While working at Klein Tools he still missed his love of the restaurant business, in the 1980’s an opportunity arose to purchase the BL Plenty’s Restaurant in Grayslake thus changing the name to Vic’s BL Plenty’s. Unfortunately, this became too much even with family assistance and sold the business in 1989. In 2010, Vic retired from Klein Tools after 33 years of service at the age of 71.

Even though Vic had a full plate, he still made time for leisure and time with his family. In the 1970’s, he obtained his single engine Pilot’s License and enjoyed the freedom that comes with this. Vic also took his family on many road trips to Florida, California and Northern Wisconsin.  To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, they took their children’s family on a trip of a lifetime to Walt Disney World!

Vic was a proud member of the Gagewood Lions Club for 45 years. He chaired many committees, events and held the position of President (1982-1983). The major fundraising events included the Candy Day and the Annual Christmas tree sales. He received the LIF (Lions of Illinois Foundation) award in 2001 and the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 1995. Vic was also a member and chairman of the Warren Township Youth Committee from 1978 – 1983.

Upon retirement, Vic and Barb spent their time traveling across the US to visit family, friends and Casino’s. They frequently visited their property in the Northwoods of Wisconsin but most of all enjoyed spending time with their Grandchildren.

Vic is survived by his children, Steven (Sue) Palazzolo of Gurnee and Anita (Will) Gregory of Sturgeon Bay, WI; he was a devoted Grandfather “Pop” to Nick, Miranda, Tim, and Julia; and his siblings, Rose Liles, Sue Wicinski, and Pixie Myers; many nieces, nephews and dear friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; and his brothers, Jack Beeter, William Palazzolo, and Samuel Palazzolo.

For those who knew Vic, he was always Terrific!

Special thanks to his medical team and Journey Care Hospice for their compassionate care.

A funeral service will be held at Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030 on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 6:00pm.  A visitation will be held on Sunday at the funeral chapel from 3:00pm until the time of service.  Interment will be held privately.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gagewood Lions Club or the American Cancer Society.  For more information, please call (847)223-8122 or visit www.StrangFuneral.org

Russell Combs

Russell Combs, age 76, a resident of Lake Villa, passed away on December 1 at Condell Hospital in Libertyville, IL.   He was born on March 21, 1945 in Ottumwa, IA to  Dr. Elmer and Ula Combs. Russell is survived by his son Alex (Kelley) Combs, his grandson Bennett Combs, his sister Cathy (Lynn O’Dell), in laws Peter and Peg Scurto, Jane Manarik and many nieces and nephews. Russell lived in Iowa and Virginia but spent most of his childhood in his mother’s native Missouri after he lost his father at age 5. He spent his youth there eventually graduating from Central Methodist University.

He moved to Illinois and was a history teacher and basketball coach at Spaulding School in Waukegan, IL where he met Maureen Scurto, a new 6th grade teacher in September of 1970. They were engaged by December and married the following June 12, 1971. On teachers’ salaries they wanted buy a home and start a family and Russ’ ambition and determination toward that goal was incomparable. While working full-time as a teacher he worked at Carroll’s menswear in Lakehurst, ABC Rental in Round Lake Beach and Lakes News Service in Grayslake. At times he worked up to 3 jobs at once, willing to do anything to secure his family’s future and happiness. He was uncomplaining of the sacrifices he made and was always willing to help someone else before thinking of himself.

He eventually left education and enjoyed spending the rest of his career in banking until his retirement.

Russ was very civic minded and giving of his time to others in need. His first volunteer effort, in the 1960’s and far before there was a broad awareness of the need, was with the Boy Scouts of America as troop leader for young boys with disabilities. He wanted to give these children the chance to experience nature and friendship while imparting the values of the organization. He was a past member of the Grayslake Jaycees and enjoyed participating in their philanthropy to the community. He was also honored to be a police commissioner for the Village of Round Lake Beach for many years. He most enjoyed spending several seasons as a coach for Avon Township Youth Baseball for his young sons.

His integrity and devotion to his loved ones defined him. He was always ready with a smile, a helping hand or sympathetic ear to anyone he encountered. No family party every really started until Russ was there. He was that important and that dear to those who knew him.

He was a long time member of St. Andrew’s Church in Grayslake.
