James C. Garrett

James Charles Garrett, age 73, a resident of Fox Lake, Il, passed away on July 19, 2022 at Northwestern Hospital in McHenry, Il.  He was born on December 7, 1948 to Charles and Dorothy Garrett. Jim was born in Chicago but his family soon moved to Lake Villa, Il where he grew up in a neighborhood called Venetian Village. He met many lifelong friends there- many of which he stayed in touch with. Stories of “garage basketball”, Whiffle Ball, 16” softball games, and badminton in the vacant lot next door were told on an annual basis.  He loved that place.  Jim attended Grayslake High School where he starred in three sports, most notably baseball.  His baseball career continued when he went to Valparaiso University where he graduated in 1971. After college he worked for his father at Pepsi. Shortly thereafter, he got a job at U.S. Envelope/Westvaco/MeadWestvaco where he stayed for 35+ years. It’s here where he made an indelible impression on many people through his mentorship, business knowledge, and incredible work ethic.  He ultimately ascended to Plant Manager where he oversaw the construction of a new facility in Kenosha, WI. Although he was a humble man, we knew he took great pride in these accomplishments- which made him happy. Dad was very involved in our lives and we appreciated it- whether it was coaching or attending various sporting events, dance recitals, camping excursions, graduations or the birth of his grandchildren.  He also provided great advice when we needed it most.  He was an awesome father that loved his entire family greatly.  And we will always love and remember him just as much. Rest in peace, Dad.

James is survived by his wife, Genie Garrett; his children, Jason (Nancy) Garrett and Emily (Chris) Garrett; his grandchildren, Ruby, Eloise, Grace, Arloa, Otto James, and CoraRose; his sister, Betty Garrett and his nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Charlene Huhnstock.

Charles E. Plaiss

Charles (Charlie) E. Plaiss, 86, passed away July 16, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 27, 1936, in Edwardsville, IN to Nelson and Eleanor (nee Rogers) Plaiss.  Charlie was a graduate of Waller High School Class of ’54. He started college in Chicago and studied Industrial Engineering until his father became ill.  He then chose to leave school to support the family.  He joined the Army and served as an Army Ranger, training soldiers to “jump out of perfectly good airplanes” (one of his favorite expressions!). After his Honorable discharge, Charlie began a 40-year career with United Parcel Service. In addition to his full-time job driving the ‘big-rigs’ (tractor-trailers), Charlie pursued many passions.  Most notably, he was an inventor and had multiple patents in his name.  He also was a contractor, having built several homes single-handedly, ‘from the ground up’, as well as home renovations.  He was an entrepreneur, launching multiple companies to maintain his larger projects.  After retiring, Charlie and Sandy, his adoring wife of 53 years, retired to a farm in Doniphan, MO.  There they were blessed to ‘live their dream’ of a quiet, rural life.  After 15 years of bliss, Sandy’s health declined, forcing them to return north to be near their children.

Charlie is survived by his 4 daughters Charmaine (Peter) Bychowski, Cherie (Wayne) Finlayson, Carla (Michael) Koch, and Charlotte Jensen; his 11 grandchildren, Shannon Finlayson (Bob) Denna, Eric (Christina) Finlayson, Ashley Finlayson (Jake Patterson), Ryan Finlayson, Jordan Finlayson, Melissa Bychowski (Bryan) Rouse, Thomas (Ashley) Bychowski, Jacob (Carolina) Bychowski, Benjamin Jensen, Connor Koch and Claire Koch and 5 great-grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by his wife Sandy, his parents, and his brother Nelson L Plaiss.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Bede Catholic Church 36455 N Wilson Rd Ingleside, IL 60041 on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 10:00 am. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to Victory Lakes Assisted Living in Lindenhurst, IL (where he was blessed to have lived in their phenomenal care for the last 4 years of life), or to St. Bede Catholic Church in Ingleside IL, are most appreciated.

All funeral arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030. For more information please contact (847)223-8122 or log onto www.strangfuneral.org.

Maureen Daly

Maureen Daly died on Jul. 11, 2022 in Grayslake, Illinois. The understood cause of death was congestive heart failure, but her death came suddenly and unexpectedly; in the days prior to her death she was preparing for a move to an assisted living center, a move that was supposed to happen later that week.  Ms. Daly was 83 years old. She was born on May 14, 1939 in Aruba in the Dutch Caribbean. Her father worked for the Esso Oil Company and her mother was a teacher. The oil refineries on the island made it a potential target during WWII, and for a period women and children were evacuated from the island; Ms. Daly was the youngest evacuee. Her parents were from Missouri and Oklahoma, and Ms. Daly and her family visited relatives there and elsewhere in the country   throughout her childhood, traveling to U.S. ports on Esso oil tankers. She had an avid interest in the movies and records that were being made in the U.S., and she eagerly anticipated those from her far away home. But she retained a lifelong affection for Aruba, having explored much of the island freely as a child and having made many friends there. Later in life, when she was able to, she returned to Aruba for reunions, often with her parents and children.  She had many interests. She was a Marine Girl Scout when she was young, and she was proud to have earned many badges and ribbons. She returned to school as a single mother, and she obtained degrees in archeology and classical languages. Her love of music wasn’t limited to the popular music of her youth. She sang in choirs throughout her life and had a fondness for works such as Brahms’ Requiem; she loved opera; when she had children she played them recordings of folk songs, to include songs in many languages.  She enjoyed traveling, and during her life she visited Central Europe, Cyprus, and Egypt. In her later years she took a great deal of interest in Australia and New Zealand, but sadly was unable to make those trips. Not all of her interests were highbrow; she also enjoyed romance novels and YouTube videos. She liked to go to restaurants. She gardened. She had cats and dogs and for a few weeks kept a chicken in her house because her younger daughter wanted to raise it. After leaving Aruba with her family at age 16, when the refinery closed, she lived in the U.S. She eventually attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She married, settled in Marlow Heights, Maryland, and had three children. She enjoyed working at the Naval Yard for a few years. She later divorced and moved with her children to Columbia, Missouri, where she worked hard to give them a nice home despite her limited means. She remained in Columbia for many years, working as a secretary for the Religious Studies program at the University Of Missouri, but following her retirement she moved to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania and Grayslake, Illinois to be closer to family. She joined churches in each place she lived and was an active member of the congregations she joined, sitting on committees, teaching Sunday school, participating in services, serving as a deacon, singing in choirs, and playing in a bell choir.

Ms. Daly is survived by her three children (Debbie Breese-Garelick, Doug Breese, and Susan Pinkowski), two sons-in-law (Paul Breese-Garelick and Mike Pinkowski), four grandchildren (Tegan Biun, Kiri Breese-Garelick, Lily Pinkowski, and Ann Pinkowski), and Tegan’s husband Dave Biun. She was preceded in death by her parents (Cary and Beulah Daly) and her younger brother John Daly.

Ms. Daly was an independent woman, despite the difficulties that often entailed. She lived modestly, but wasn’t one to express bitterness or regret. She is remembered as a kind and gentle Christian woman with a lovely low-key sense of humor. She passed on to her children a love of reading and learning, but also particular interests in nature, music, and service to others. Her time with us has ended, and she has been relieved of the sorts of problems that life perhaps inevitably brings. Her relief will be our loss, and we will feel her absence and miss her dearly. We hope and pray that she will one day greet us warmly again, as she so often did when we got together. She was a good woman, the world is poorer now that she is gone, and it is up to us, we suppose, to live up to the best of her example. There will be a private ceremony for the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the Humane Society (www.humanesociety.org), the World Wildlife Federation (support.worldwildlife.org), or the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation (www.kiritekanawa.org/donations).  For more information, please call (847)223-8122 or visit www.StrangFuneral.org

Barbara Marie Coe Mette

Barbara Marie Coe Mette, 86, of Libertyville, Illinois, passed away on July 12, 2022, surrounded by her immediate family.

Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Wendell & Gertrude McClure; her first husband, Jack Coe; and her second husband, William Mette. She is survived by one sister, Nancy (and Bill) DiGilio; three daughters: Milissa (and Mark Andrews) Gagin, Aimée (and Scott Whitesell) Coe, and Kristen (and Brad) Peek; and one son, Lawrence Coe; as well as ten grandchildren: Whitney Johnson, Meredith (and Casey) Parker, Jack Gagin, Max Gagin, Grant Johnson, Blake Peek, Nolan Peek, Seth Johnson, Sam Gagin, and Lili Gagin. She has four great-grandchildren: Everett, Arden, Silas, and Bridger Parker.

Born Barbara McClure on June 19, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, Barbara lived her whole life in the northern suburbs of Chicago. She graduated from St. Ferdinand’s grade school and Alvernia High School, and then went on to attend Clark College. In 1957, she met and then married Jack Coe, her first husband and the father of her four children. Her career began at G.D. Searle & Company, and then she worked in high-end retail at Neiman Marcus in Northbrook, Illinois, for 30 plus years where work became her passion and colleagues, and clients became lifelong friendships. As a young woman, she very independently raised Milissa, Aimée, Kristen, and Lawrence while Jack traveled for work. She enjoyed lake life at Lake Delevan, played tennis and piano, and traveled the world with Jack until his death in 1998. In the next chapter, Barbara met and married her second husband, Bill Mette, in 1999, and the two proceeded with world travel and enjoying their many grandchildren for sixteen years until Bill’s death in 2016. Barbara was full of class and refinement – a notorious “night owl” who loved to absorb high-fashion periodicals; sharpen her mind with jigsaw, crossword, and Sudoku puzzles; play Bridge with Nancy and Bill; knit sweater after beautiful sweater; and sip on Glenlivet as the midnight hour came and went. Often filled with family and friends, Barbara’s dining room table was never short on good food, loud storytelling, strong opinions, and happy laughter.

A Mass in Barbara’s memory will take place on Monday, July 18, 2022 at 1:00pm at St. Norbert Church, 1809 Walters Ave, Northbrook, IL. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Monday, July 18, 2022 from 2:30pm until 5:30pm at Francesca’s North, 1145 Church St, Northbrook, IL.
