Michael E. Davis

Michael Eugene Davis, age 68, a resident of Grayslake, IL, passed away on November 4, 2022 at Condell Hospital in Libertyville, IL.  He was born on September 26, 1954 in Kirksville, MO to Ken and Delores Davis.

Michael is survived by his wife of 44 years, Deborah (née Kepler); his mother, Delores (née Bell) Davis; his sons, Jason (Fabiola Escaray) Davis of Madrid, Spain and Brandon (Alexis Fogel) Davis of Oakland, CA; his granddaughters, Camila and Isabella; his brother-in-law, Mike Reynolds; his nieces, Jodee and Andrea; and his nephew, Jeremy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ken Davis; and his sister, Patricia Reynolds.

Michael dedicated 33 years of employment at the United States Post Office before retiring in 2017. He was an active and proud member of the deaf community, having attended the Illinois School for the Deaf from 1961-1974. Michael met his wife at Waubonsee Community College and after quickly falling in love, planted roots in Lake County.

Michael and his wife were avid bowling, cornhole, ladders, and card players. They loved traveling the world together, visiting their boys and beautiful granddaughters, and spending time with their wonderful network of friends. Despite his wife’s love for the Cubs, he was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan. Michael was blessed with many furry companions (Kia, Abe, and most recently Popcorn), and enjoyed brisk – but not too cold – walks with them in the snow.

Above all, Michael was a selflessly dedicated husband and father who will be dearly missed by the many who he touched through community, laughter, and games.

George J. Skowzgird

George John Skowzgird, 90, a resident of Wauconda, passed away on October 23, 2022 at Thrive of Lake County in Mundelein, IL.  He was born on September 23, 1932 to Frances and Anton Skowzgird. George was born and raised on the southside of Chicago, and spent many summers at his stepsister’s farm in Michigan.  He was a lifelong Chicago White Sox, Bulls, Arizona Cardinals (formerly Chicago Cardinals) and a die-hard Michigan Wolverines fan who never (rarely) missed a televised game.  He enjoyed fishing (or talking about it anyway), and took many trips to Wisconsin, Michigan and Canada chasing the “big one”.

He had an incredible memory.  Whether it be the names of celebrities and their spouses, scores of games and players names from college teams in the 1940’s, or starting line-ups of baseball, basketball, or football teams over the past 70 years, he was hard to stump.

Even up to the end, he read the daily paper, literally front to back, and knew more about world events than you could imagine.  From local politics, climate change, global conflicts, or the price of grapes…he was interested and up to date.

He loved to reminisce about the “old days”, growing up on the city’s southside where he fell in love with his wife, Alice, his time in the Air Force- having been stationed in Korea, Japan, Hawaii, Johnston Island in the Pacific, and most of all his time in Great Falls, Montana.

He enjoyed his one cup of coffee in the morning, Italian sausage or fried bologna for lunch, Neapolitan ice cream or watermelon for dessert in the evenings (not to mention an occasional “highball” cocktail when there was a party going on).

He will be missed by many, and leaves behind his children, Janet (Andrew) Warack and Ronald (Joni) Skowzgird; his daughter-in-law, Basia; his grandchildren, Krystine (Jake) Mullins, Joanne (Sean) Forbes, Michelle (Darcey De La O) Skowzgird, Andrew (Hayley) Warack, Lisa Warack, Nicole (Will) Mickelsen, and Michael Skowzgird; and his great grandchildren, Connor, Olivia, Quinn, Rory, Konrad, Rocco, Jacob, Danny, Asher, Drew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice (nee Weiss) Skowzgird; and his son, Richard Skowzgird.

Jay Florian

Jay Florian, 61, of Antioch, IL, passed away on October 18, 2022, surrounded by his loving family, at Hospice Alliance’s Hospice House, in Pleasant Prairie, WI. He was born on October 28, 1960, in Libertyville, IL, completing the family of Don and Marcia Florian and older sister, Cec Florian.  As a child he loved attending Avon Elementary School and spending time exploring his Highland Lake, IL, neighborhood. He attended Grayslake Community High School and Bradley University.  Upon graduating he managed the family’s Hainesville store, Stop N Save, then went on to become a commercial real estate appraiser.

Jay married his high school classmate and forever soulmate, Gayle Schulz Florian, on May 28, 1983. Together they loved raising their family of two daughters, Gina (Sam) LeMense and Alexi (Quinn) Asaro.  Jay dedicated himself to supporting his family’s endeavors, being a constant presence in the bleachers at their sporting events as well as cheering them on in their own adventures and hobbies into adulthood.  He endeared himself to others with his warm smile, contagious laugh, kind and generous heart, quick wit, and whacky sense of humor. Jay helped create the kind of warm and inviting home environment that became a retreat for many of the girls’ friends who often remark that the Florian house felt like a second home.

A geographer at heart, Jay read maps like books, and was always planning his next trip.  He particularly loved escaping civilization on long treks, hiking and backpacking throughout the country.  His passion for the outdoors and conservation led him to years of volunteering in local forest preserves as well as cultivating a native pollinator garden in his own backyard.  He enthusiastically shared his love for nature through his gift for photography, winning awards in local contests as well as adding beauty to social media platforms that can often be otherwise divisive.

Jay enjoyed crafting delicious meals for the ones he loved, especially serving them out on the deck overlooking the beautiful woods and wetlands where he and Gayle chose to build their home.  Music was also meaningful aspect of Jay’s dynamic life, and it was typical for Jay to be soaking in nostalgic tunes as well as discovering new artists who provided the soundtrack of his days. He always looked forward to attending concerts with his family and friends.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030 from 1:00pm until 5:00pm with a service at 3:00pm.

Excess funds will be used for a memorial in his honor and/or donated to Sierra Club, an environmental organization Jay was passionate about.
