Obituary's Biography:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Armstrong, a beloved teacher, bus driver, devoted father, husband, and cherished member of his community. John passed away October 24, 2024 at the age of 68 after a life spent giving, guiding, and making a difference in the lives of those around him. Born in Michigan and a graduate of Eastern Michigan University, John’s passion for education and service to youth was a defining feature of his life. At Eastern Michigan, he pursued a triple minor in early childhood education, children’s literature, and theater for children; a combination that captured his lifelong commitment to inspiring and nurturing young minds. He earned a master’s in education at LSU while teaching in southern Louisiana. John’s career as a teacher and bus driver provided countless students not only with an education, but also with the kind of encouragement and mentorship that only a truly dedicated individual can give. John was also deeply involved in scouting, as a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts and a dedicated staffer at the Owasippe Scout Reservation. His impact as a leader went beyond merit badges and skills; he taught integrity, perseverance, and kindness by example. His role as an AWANA leader and active member of CrossView Church in Antioch reflected his faith and commitment to serving others with an open heart.

John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Casteen Armstrong, a sister, Sandra Hebron (Terence) and a son, Joshua Armstrong (Carolyn). He is survived by the love of his life, Ruth, who he married in 1982. Together, they built a family rooted in love and laughter, becoming loving parents. Their surviving sons are Adam (Katie) and Isaac (Phoenix). John was also a proud and adoring Papa to his grandchildren, Malcolm and Miranda, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by a large extended family, scout family and church family. 

John’s kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment to his family and community will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. His legacy lives on through his family, his students, and the countless lives he touched.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at CrossView Church 750 Highview Dr, Antioch Il, 60002,on November 10, 2024, Visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Service at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John’s honor to CrossView Church or The American Cancer Society, so his legacy of support and mentorship can continue to inspire others.   1. I’ll remember John as a very caring person towards the young people and soft spoken to the adult’s.
    Knowing his destination makes it easier to handle his absence.

  2. John was a very active member of CrossView Church. He worked in the nursery and children’s ministry for many years. He also worked in CrossView Bread of Life Food Pantry until his health prohibited it. He will be greatly missed by his friends, but we know he is sitting at the feet of Jesus. Our deep condolences to Ruth and the rest of the family.
