  13. Pant Uncle, was a true Uncle and Tauji to my sister and I. For as long as I can remember, Pant Uncle affectionally called my sister and I “Bhaloo” (my sister more than me, much to my jealousy). Growing up many of my childhood vacations and memories have included visiting Pant Uncle and Kamala Auntie. Whether it be at their home in Maryland and playing with Garima and visiting DC landmarks, to one-of-a-kind experiences in Woods Hole, Pant Uncle would always make time for us, no matter how busy he may have been with work.

There are not enough words to describe Pant Uncle’s attributes: selfless, caring, smart, humble, kind; the list is truly endless.

Our thoughts are with Kamala Auntie, Alok and Manish Dada, Garima, and the entire Pant family and extended family. We are all better for having Pant Uncle in our life and will remember and miss him dearly.

  14. Harish was an extraordinary man with a rich spirit. I had the pleasure of spending time with him during his later years. He cooked the best food I have very tasted. Not to mention he had a wonderful subtle sense of humor. An incredibly humble man considering all of his accomplishments in the field of neuroscience. He always made me feel welcome despite our different backgrounds. I have never met someone with so much wisdom and compassion. Spending time around him and his family has played an imperative role into my growth as a human. My heart is heavy for The Pant family and the many people through out the world grieving his loss. However I know his love and light will continue to shine through each and everyone one of us. He was a great man. May his soul rest in peace.

  16. Harish was a precious friend who meant the world to me. Harish had a life well lived. I first met Harish in 1990’s when I joined NIH. Scientifically, Harish and I shared similar interests and we collaborated on various research projects and published research papers togather. Harish was always an eternal optimist and an encouraging soul to everyone around him. Socially, my wife Christine and I shared and enjoyed numerous dinner parties with Harish and Kamala and other close friends. After Harish got ill and moved to Chicago, I have greatly missed the Sunday group luncheons and discussions with Harish, Krishna and other friends. Harish will be forever in our hearts. His memory will live on inside each of us, as well as his legacy for all who knew him. My deepest condolence to Kamala, Alok, Manish, Garima and the entire Pant family.

  17. “You can take the person out of the place, but you can’t take the place out of the person.” No one exemplifies this proverb better than Dr. Harish Pant. Even after leaving Uttarakhand, (India) more than 50 years ago, starting a new life in the US, and reaching the highest pinnacle of science, Dr. Pant’s love and joy in his heritage was always palpable. With his passing, we have lost a giant of the community.

Long before WhatsApp, emails, and the internet, Dr. Pant ji taught us an important lesson, you cannot supplant the human touch. The Holi parties that Dr. Pant and Mrs. Kamla Pant organized every year in their house were legendary. They drew people not only from the greater Washington DC area but from across the US and sometimes as far as Canada and India.

Later, Dr. Pant ji along with his Degree College (Nainital) alumnus, Dr. Roop Bhakuni ji served as longstanding members of the Board of Directors of the Uttaranchal Association of North America (UANA) to formally bring the Uttarakhandi community together. Through, UANA, Pantji and his family made substantial contributions to fund medical and educational initiatives in Uttarakhand.

I would be remiss and selfish to confine the impact of Dr. Pantji to only the Uttarakhandi community. Through his remarkable 40+ years at the National Institute of Health, he helped shape the careers of aspiring scientists from all across India and the world. Each of the post doc student and junior scientist who trained in his lab became part of the Pant family.

Dr. Pant was a world citizen but we take immense pride that he served as a shining example and role model for all Uttarakhandis. We celebrate his life and tremendous legacy.

  18. It’s still hard to accept this news of Pant uncle’s passing. Kamla aunti, Alok, Manish, Garima and all the family members please accept our deepest condolences. May God give peace to the departed soul and strength to the family at this difficult time.
I have no words to express my gratitude to Pant uncle. Pant uncle was a God sent angel on this earth. Mayank and myself are so fortunate to be associated with Pant uncle and aunti for over 30 years when doing our PhD at Maryland. Uncle and aunti treated us like their own children. Their family is my own family away from India. Uncle was an inspiration to all. I remember all the Holi gatherings in their house, family events, amazing cooking, UANA functions, UANA Board member meetings/projects, his major scientific contributions in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and many other beautiful discussions we had related to our families/Uttrakhand. He was a true Pahari and he went out of his way to help everyone who came in his contact. I always looked up at him as my mentor and an inspiration. I will always remember his smile, love, affection and care for everyone. His outstanding career, down to earth nature and generosity to the whole community was well known and highly admired in the community. Pant Uncle made all of us Pahari proud.
His departure leaves an irreplaceable whole in the entire pahari and extended community. Mera sat sat naman to this Dev Bhumi ke putra ko who kept inspiring all of us. We are all so blessed to have had Pant Uncle in our life. His Life is a Celebration! We will cherish the good memories and miss him dearly.

    Om Shanti🙏

  19. Dr. Harsh Pant is my uncle. I say ‘is’ because he can never die from our hearts. We are proud to be a member of his family. Whenever he was in Kolkata, he stayed with us. He was always soft spoken, cheerful, smiling and ready to resolve every problem. He was very witty with a pinch of humor. I always enjoyed his company. Once he together with my aunt Kamala, my father, my another uncle, Dr. D.D. Pant and I went to Jakhera and Devradi and that was a wonderful experience I had and that is always fresh in mind and heart. To me, both Dr. D.D. Pant and Dr. Harsh Pant are extra ordinary genius, humble and above all finest human beings.
I will try to reach Kamala aunti , brothers Alok and Manish and also Garima personally.

  26. It appears to me that it was yesterday when Dr. Harish, my favorite uncle had come to Kolkata to see his eldest brother (my father) before setting out for USA. It was about 54-55 years ago. I was a kid then but I vividly remember that we enjoyed the whole day around Victoria memorial. Our whole family watched a film titled Patthar Ke Sanam.
He was so handsome, charming affectionate, polite and soft spoken that we used to talk about him after his departure.
After dinner that night, I asked him a riddle: There were 10 pigeons on a tree. A hunter came and shot one. Then how many left? And he smilingly replied: goli mari, sab ud gaye!
He had a sweet dimple in the middle of his chin. I asked him why that happened and he replied: Meri ija ne yahan oongly rakhkar kaha ki ye Harish hai aur bus, yahan khadda ban gaya.
From USA, he used to write to us letters. Once my father in a letter suggested that it was the high time for him to get married. And came the reply after a month : Daju, adhi jindagi gujar gai hai, kuchh gujar rahi hai, aur kuchh gujar hi jayegi…. His wit and humors were also extraordinary.
When I was in my twenties, Harish Chacha, Kamala Chachi, Tauji(Dr. D.D.Pant), Mohan Chacha and I went to Jakheda and Deoradi. I cannot
    forget that wonderful trip.
We met many times. Whenever he was in India he came to Kolkata and stayed with us. He was fond of Hilsa fish, a speciality of Bengal.
Despite his busy schedules in Kolkata for delivering lectures, he never missed the opportunity to go to the fish market with me to watch the process of selecting fish and bargaining thereafter.
Simplicity and intelligence: thy name was Dr. Harish Pant.

  27. Passing away of ‘Sir’ – Dr. Pant – is a huge personal loss to me and my wife Monica. Not only did I learn the nuances of neurofilament phosphorylation during the postdoctoral stint in his laboratory, his humility,
simplicity and magnanimity was a huge influence on me as a person. One of the finest human beings one would ever come across, he helped countless number of people and more importantly selflessly. I will be ever grateful to him to take me and my wife under his wings. Me and my wife Monica will be ever grateful to him for taking us ‘under his wings’ and help us establish academic careers. Even more affectionately, we remember his concern about our well- being and his efforts to do anything to make us comfortable. We have not only lost a prominent scientist, we have lost a rare human being who touched almost anyone who came in touch with him. My heart goes out for Mrs Pant, Alok, Manish and the entire family. May God give them strength to bear this loss.
May his soul Rest in Peace

  33. We all will remember Harish.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
We met at NIH seminars. I was glad to visit his lab. I was touched by his and his wife’s hospitality and friendliness.
He was always very nice to his colleagues and collaborators, stimulated interesting discussions, and innovative approaches.
We will miss him very much.

  34. Harish ji, a gentle soul with feet firmly planted on the ground, let an indelible mark on the hearts of the North American Uttarakhandi community. I first met him years ago and was instantly drawn to his warm, unassuming nature. He served as a pillar of strength, always present and reliable. The joy of conversing with him in our native Kumauni was unparalleled. During his summer stays in Woods Hole, his home became a welcoming haven for all Uttarakhandis in New England. A brilliant scientist, his passion for knowledge was infectious, making our conversations both stimulating and insightful. His absence leaves a void, but his memory and gentle spirit will live on. Om Shanti!

  36. Harish Uncle is someone I will never forget and always hold very close to my heart, so much of my formative years were spent in your home, having sleepovers with Garima, watching movies, just doing the most mundane things, I felt like a member of the family, he always was so nice to me and treated me so well. Sending so much love to you all.

  37. I was so sad to hear the news about Harish’s passing. I first met Harish and Kamala during my first summer at the MBL in Woods Hole, and later, in the 1980’s had the great pleasure of working and collaborating with him at the NIH. The times I spent with him and his family are among my fondest memories of my time at the NIH. Harish has a beautiful soul and his presence in my life was a great gift. My condolences to Kamala, Alok, Manish, Garima and the rest of his family. He will be missed.

  38. Harish Pant was an extraordinary human being, kind, empathetic and helpful. We were from the same neck of woods in India– the region of Kumaon. I got to know him when I came to the US for the first time in 1975. Later we met again in Rockville when I was there for a two year assignment. We also came to be related when a cousin married his sister-in-law (Kamala’s sister). I cannot recount the numerous ways in which he helped us, took care of us and gave uninhibited love and affection to me and my family. Our thoughts are with Kamala, Alok, Manish, Garima, Melissa, Kaylan and the grandchildren. Om Shanti, Shanti Shanti.

  42. I feel very sad to hear that Harish passed away. I know him more than 30 years since we met firstly at the intermediate filament conference in USA. I remember that he talked me kindly at the meeting when I was alone as a latecomer in the field of IFs. Since then, we had similar research interests, changing our main subject in a similar direction from neurofilament phosphorylation to Cdk5 with him always being ahead of me. Really, he was a great scientist leading the field of neurofilament and Cdk5. I and my students discussed him and his colleagues always when we visited the SFN meeting. He was very kind and educative also for my students. Thanks to him, I had opportunities to visit India two times, the neuroscience meeting in the Jaipur and his sun’s marriage in the Nainital. He made arrangement of my trip carefully and so they were my unforgettable memories. I had many friends through him and enjoyed the research with him. I missed him for these several years since I retired and finally had the day to lost him. Please accept my deepest condolences.

    1. I feel honoured to be able to work as a postdoc at Pant Lab. Dr. Pant was a humble, generous and empathetic investigator, who encouraged his fellows to bring out their best.
