Philip Malizio
Philip Malizio, age 71, a resident of Lake Villa, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020 at his home. He was born July 11, 1948 in Evanston to Frank and Arline Malizio. Philip was a member of the American Legion and Teamsters local 731. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Philip was stationed in Panama from 1968-1970. He was a simple man with simple needs. He was content with little. Philip was also an avid sports memorabilia collector and a baseball fan. As a child, Gina came home with a pack of baseball cards and it sparked an obsession and love for baseball collectibles including cards and autograph baseballs. Gina and Phil would then take trips to the multiplex the years the Bulls were in championship mode and they got players’ autographs. They were such regulars there that Phil Jackson had accosted Phil and asked him if he was selling this for a profit. He was not and never did. Philip drove a semi-truck for a living, hauling steel initially and then construction materials and made many lifelong friends in the process. This is when and where he became a teamster. He would occasionally take Gina and Pat’s younger, Bryan, for rides. They both had fun on “truck day.” Later in life he drove a school bus and was a fan favorite of the kids. After that, he became a patient driving instructor. Not sure if it was the same when Gina was learning how to drive, whether she would have agreed with the term “patient,” nevertheless. Philip also enjoyed small road trips, a good diner breakfast with his brothers and good friends. Later on after his disability made it more difficult for him to be mobile, he developed a love for nature. He would sit out on the deck watching the different birds and squirrels. He had a squirrel feeder out and even named the squirrels. Philip is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia, whom he married in Glenview on March 17, 1979; daughter, Gina of Chicago; and brothers, Norman (Jana) Malizio of Mundelein and Lawrence Malizio of Libertyville. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne. A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2020 from 11:00am until 2:00pm followed by a memorial funeral service at 2:00pm at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 East Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the Veterans Association of America. For more information, please call 847-223-8122 or log on to www.strangfuneral.org.

Ronald Allan Spriester
Ronald Allan Spriester
September 17, 1953 – April 9, 2025
Ronald Allan Spriester, a beloved husband, father, and brother, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving wife on April 9, 2025, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. He was only 71 years old.
Born at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois on September 17, 1953, Ron entered the world during his father’s Army service. Ron’s parents were Northwestern University music majors, with his father later serving as the band director at Deerfield High School for many years. Consequently, Ron and his siblings were introduced to music at an early age. Following in his father’s footsteps, he took up the trumpet and enjoyed playing well into his adult years in the Deerfield Community Band and The Big Band Sound of Deerfield.
Ron also inherited his maternal grandfather’s interest in carpentry, dedicating over 40 years to his craft. As a journeyman, Ron worked on hundreds of homes throughout Lake County, Illinois, and beyond. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of meticulous craftsmanship reflected in the quality of his work.
In 1984, Ron met the love of his life, Sharon Nolan, on a blind date. Together, they received Jesus as their Lord and Savior and were later married on September 19, 1987. Ron and Sharon chose to educate their three children at home and have had the joy and privilege of watching each of them succeed academically and build their own fulfilling lives. While their children were young, Ron volunteered many hours working at their local church, often bringing his son, Brett, along.
Following his retirement in 2014, Ron embraced the opportunity to serve his community by offering his carpentry skills to others and keeping up with village projects and board meetings. He also enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors and cultivating his garden. He remained a dedicated Northwestern fan, attending as many sporting events as possible with enthusiasm and pride.
Ron was steady, honest, intuitive, thoughtful, and fun-loving. He wasn’t a man who sought attention but preferred to observe and support from the sidelines, profoundly touching the lives of those around him. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void, yet his legacy of love, faith, and humor endures in all who were lucky enough to know him.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Dorothy (née Zarbock). He is survived and deeply missed by his wife of 37 years, Sharon (née Nolan), and his children: Brett (Julie) Spriester of Wheeling, Janna (Justin) Scrivner of Lake Villa, and Bonnie (Andrew) Pierce of Mundelein. He also leaves behind his siblings: Pam (Paul) Bell, Sandy (Carl) Markowitz, Laurie (Russ) Davis, Terri Spriester, and Bart (Mary) Spriester, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial gathering to honor Ron’s life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Strang Funeral Chapel in Grayslake, Illinois. Visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Northwestern Memorial Foundation, supporting the ongoing search for cancer treatments and cures. For more information log onto www.strangfuneral.org or contact 847-223-8122.

John K. Wilen II
John K. Wilen II, 68, a resident of Grayslake, IL formally of Glenview IL, passed away March 18, 2025 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL. He was born December 26, 1956, in Evanston, IL to John K. Wilen Jr. and Mary Wilen (prev. Miller nee DeRoque).
After going to art school, he was hired by a small exhibit company in Chicago. Four years later, he and 3 others formed Dimension Works, Inc. It became one of the largest privately owned exhibit companies in the United States. He expanded Dimension Works’ reach to Europe and Brazil. Dimension Works was represented at the industry’s Las Vegas trade shows for many years
John was an avid motorcyclist for most of his adult life. In 1981, he and Debbie bought a BMW motorcycle in Munich and toured all over Europe spending 3 weeks on the road. He also traveled around the US, including Alaska, with other motorcycle enthusiasts.
His next passion was scuba diving, which he did in oceans and seas around the world. He loved seeing all the big fish like hammerhead sharks and barracuda, videotaping everything along the way. Many of the places he dove were Cozumel, Curacao, Belize, Coco Islands and Thailand. He and Debbie went on a few dive trips together and then included their children. John and Jenna enjoyed a wonderful dive trip to Papua New Guinea.
He loved to snow ski, too. The family started skiing at Chestnut Mountain in Galena, IL, then continued on to the big mountains of Colorado; Breckridge, Keystone and Vail. The whole family enjoyed skiing together. A highlight of his life was skiing with his children in St Moritz, Switzerland in 2002.
The family traveled to Disney World many times as Debbie convinced John it was “the happiest place on earth!”. John and Debbie had many other vacations including cruises to the Caribbean, and Alaska. For their 30th anniversary, they enjoyed a vacation in Hawaii. And for their 40th, they took a cruise along the Danube River.
He and Debbie enjoyed curling for many years. John became very accomplished. He participated in many Bonspiels in different cities, winning many along the way.
After operating Dimension Works for more than 20 years, he and his partners sold the company. John was then able to start his own art business. He traveled the art show circuit for many years selling his scratchboard art. His schedule was grueling as he was at an art show every weekend from April to October. But he was awarded over and over again for his amazing artwork.
He decided to stop selling his art, stay home and pursue another enterprise. He and Debbie bought a frame store. This way, he could continue being creative while putting his business skills to work, and work with his wife. After 8 years, they decided it was time to retire.
They had hoped to travel to all the other places in the world they hadn’t been to yet but due to health issues they were unable. He then took advantage of being homebond and spent time with his grandkids and family. He was so loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
