Edwin L. Hall Jr.
Obituary's Biography:
Edwin Lawrence Hall, Jr., age 92, of Grayslake, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on February 23, 2017. Ed was born to Edwin Sr. and Maude Hall in Grayslake, IL on January 16, 1925. As the oldest of three siblings, he grew up in the Grayslake area and graduated from Warren High School in 1943. In 1944, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and left for service to his country. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he began his business career at Fansteel, Inc. Shortly thereafter, Ed began working with his father in the family business, Hall’s Food Mart. However, his career truly started when he, his brother Bill, and good friend Ed Bauer opened up Parkway Foods in 1961 in downtown Grayslake. The business became a staple of the town and was a very successful grocery store and catering company. To this day, people remember the location of Parkway Foods. It truly left a mark on the entire town, and Ed was known to be a dedicated owner and the cleanest grocer in the state of Illinois! He was also committed to the town of Grayslake being an active member on the Chamber of Commerce and serving on the Board at the Bank, ultimately becoming the President of Grayslake National Bank. He was respected by all who knew him, and his optimism and laughter were contagious. Ed married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Duell, on November 24, 1944, and their marriage resulted in the birth of six children (Cheryl, Susan, Kathryn, Jennifer, Cynthia, and Kenneth). He later married Barbara Wurl and became stepfather to her son, John. After her death, he met and developed a long relationship with Linda Devine. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara, his sister Margaret Hagglund, his daughter Susan Dobson, and his grandson Ryan Fitzpatrick. He is survived by his partner Linda, his brother William Hall (Katy), his five children, his stepson, nine grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Visitation will be at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030 on Sunday, February 26th from 3:00 pm-7:00 pm with a service at 7:00. My sisters, brother and I all worked for Ed Hall at Parkway Foods. We all learned a lot of good things from Ed. We really did become lifelong friends with him and he really was an inspirational person.
Ed was a good mentor, friend and neighbor. We also banked with him at Grayslake National and referred clients to each other. Hard working, Honest, Friendly and Trustworthy is how I will always remember Ed.
Grandpa,
I’m going to miss you beyond words. The memories are so many. The hole in my heart so huge. When you find mom and Ryan hug them from me. To my aunties and uncle: family first. Always. Love you all to my core. To my cousins: you too are my blood. You are how we keep it going. Love you all deeply.
I never met your Dad, he was a nice looking man. My prayer is that God will comfort you and your family during your time of sorrow. Stay in touch and let me know if there is anything I can do from long distance. Much Love, Joyce
You are truly so kind and thoughtful…thank you!
My grandmother Hazel always spoke so fondly of the Hall family. They left such a large impact on what the history of Grayslake was all about. Parkway Foods was definitely a family affair and still provides us all with wonderful memories that will never be forgotten. Thank you Ed for being such a large part of that.
I remember Ed as the butcher at his father’s store on center street. I worked as a stock boy at the store while in High School. NICE MAN!
So many cherished memories. Ed Hall is and always will be an amazing friend. You would have to search long and hard to find a man of such honesty and integrity. Fun loving and the best laugh.
XXXOOO to everyone
Ed touched my life blessing me more than words can say. I had many opportunities to visit Ed through the years so many fond memories that I will always have in my heart. He was a great man of integrity living a well lived life always giving to others choosing the way of goodness and peace, always seeing the blessings of each new day, speaking in tenderness and care, his heart embracing each season of life with gratitude and joy. I can rest in Gods promise that Ed is at home in heaven where he belongs.
